GTWR R8G Female Racing extend their championship lead as rivals fight from the back

We are past the halfway point of More Female Racers Season 4, and as we approach that final round, the championship is getting hotter and hotter. As we headed to Silverstone on Monday evening, our two championship protagonists lined up side by side, but, they wouldn’t remain in that same formation for any more than a corner.

Sara Dove and Andrea Capoccia take commanding a win

The GWTR pairing we’ve grown to see at the top of our standings have had quite the first half to their season, winning two of the three and entering this round with a sizeable lead over their closest competitors, Griphax Engineering. However, after victory last round at Imola for the Griphax duo of Aloo Gobi and Harry Phillips, momentum had swung away from them, and as Gobi put her car on pole, it was set to be a fantastic battle.

However, a fantastic battle we didn’t get. The championship rivals made contact almost straight away, as the two cars just merged onto the same line at the exit of turn one – Copse. Of all places to make contact, Copse isn’t a good place, and it sent Gobi spinning off into the gravel. However, Dove would carry on unharmed. Rightfully, it was deemed a racing incident, leaving the GTWR pairing to sprint off into the distance.

By the end of the race, they had a gap of over forty seconds to the R8G eSports car of Yvonne Houffelaar and Giorgio Simonini. Leaving Silverstone, they’ve increased their championship lead with an absolutely dominant victory, but you’ve got to wonder, how would the race have panned out with Griphax Engineering still at the top?

Griphax Engineering rescue their race from rock bottom

So, that racing incident we were talking about. Well, that left Gobi all the way at the very back of the pack leaving the first couple of corners. However, she and Harry Phillips wouldn’t let that defeat them, as they proceeded to pull off arguably the best drive we’ve seen in More Female Racers.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for just Griphax Engineering on lap one, though. The Intruder Racing Team pairing of Mia Swensen and Yves Fild had a race even harder ahead of them, as they suffered a spin and contact into Village, before being spun again and inevitably getting collected. They managed to recover back to P21 by the flag, which was no easy feat considering the huge damage they had to sit and repair. However, Gobi and Phillips meanwhile had their sights set on the podium.

Gobi instantly unleashed her pace, setting blistering lap times and making overtakes left, right and centre. Just ten minutes into the race, she hit the top ten. This incredible progress would continue, as, after Phillips’ stint, the duo was sitting in P7. With Gobi back in the car, she continued to push on and on, snatching P3 off of Althea Boucq with just two laps to go, completing a crucial comeback drive.

GTWR R8G Female Racing 2’s unbeaten silver streak ends

GWTR R8G Female Racing 2 have had a quite simply perfect season so far, taking the top spot in Silver Class at every single race so far. Sophie Aeronwen and Matt Muirhead have looked pretty much unbeatable, but here at Silverstone, their line of perfect results came to a close.

Topping Silver Class in qualifying actually wasn’t a single GTWR car – quite a miracle considering they currently hold the top four championship positions. Instead, it was the Team Racing Point car of Roberta Lesca and Chiara Camoriano, who hadn’t yet finished within the Silver top ten but found some blistering pace, lining up third overall. They would lead the class away, and behind them, Sophie Aeronwen for GTWR was primed to pounce, but, it would head south almost straight away, going off track with Mia Swensen on the approach to Village, and later spinning in the famous Maggots and Beckets complex.

Lesca and Camoriano continued to lead in what was looking to be a dream result, but, at their second round of pitstops, their race began to take a turn for the worse. They were jumped in the pits by both the #66 GTWR R8G Female Racing 3 and #29 Mia eSport cars, but it was an incident with Ava De Andrade in Club that left her facing the wrong way, and later, struck with a Drive Through penalty for that very crash, ending their podium hopes.

But, how were Aeronwen and Muirhead? Well, they began to recover from the early spin, but, it would happen again, as Aeronwen faced the wrong way further times. The pairing would come home fifth in class by the end, with GTWR R8G Female Racing Emerald drivers Stephane Greffett and Esmeralda van der Naald taking their first win of the season.

Luna Nera bounce back to victory in Pro-AM

The previously dominant Luna Nera duo of Eliza Indriani and Vojta Pavlicek had a tough race at Imola, coming home fifth in class, but Silverstone proved to be a new race where they’d turn around their misfortune.

They would start from class pole, but would slip back to second place as Hedda Rangseter from Turn1 would snatch the lead and would face pressure from Lisa Louise Keen from the Wild Things Racing – Rossi outfit. As the first stint went on, Rangseter seemed to emerge on top, climbing up the order as Luna Nera and Wild Things Racing – Rossi slipped backwards – the prior dropping behind Louise Keen.

Stint two saw Pavlicek close in and pass Richard Pixsley of Wild Things Racing, but the Luna Nera squad still had some ground to make up to catch and pass Turn1. However, they wouldn’t meet for wheel-to-wheel fighting, as Rangseter in the final stint would have two incidents, dropping them behind both Luna Nera and Wild Thing Racing – Rossi, gifting the two a position each in the dying moments of the race.

Where’s next for MFR?

Round 5 sees us head to the tight and technical Zolder, a track that will really punish drivers for any little mistake. It’s not quite so easy to overtake at, either, so it’s unlikely we’ll see such incredible overtaking displays like we did from Griphax Engineering, so teams are going to have to really seek out every little overtaking opportunity and make it count.
