The Sim Grid x VCO World Cup: Qualifying Guide

The Sim Grid x VCO World Cup 2021 draws closer with each passing day, and we cannot contain our excitement! We are optimistic that the same applies to all the sim racers out there. Earlier, we had shared the quintessential guide on getting familiar with the World Cup with our All You Need to Know about The Sim Grid x VCO World Cup 2021 article. This time, it will be a deep dive blog with our handy World Cup Qualifying Guide!

Number of Teams and Splits

Simply put, every team is eligible to register for the 2021 World Cup. However, only the top 65 teams will be able to qualify for the actual series. The top 15 teams to qualify will enter Split 1 (P1 to P15), while the rest of the 50 teams will enter Split 2 (P16 to P65). Any team placed in P66 and below will not be able to enter the World Cup. In the case of invited teams, they will still need to register but do not have to go through the qualification process.

Qualification Prerequisites

All teams appearing for qualifying must select the “Qualifiers” class, and the only car that you can use to qualify is the Honda NSX Evo. Lastly, the track that will be used for qualifying has been set to Suzuka, as well as the server.

Qualification Process

The qualifying server, car and schedule have already been decided by the organisers to prevent any Balance of Performance (BoP) factors from entering the picture. Only the Honda NSX Evo can be used to set lap times on the Suzuka server set by us. Any time set using other cars on the server will not be counted. To make sure you get the most out of the Honda NSX Evo, check out Coach Dave Academy’s setups.

Three drivers for each team must complete a minimum of 20 valid laps on the qualification server. There is no upper limit to the number of laps you can complete. Hence, each driver’s maximum laps that they can finish is up to the team, as long as they complete 20 valid laps. At the end of the process, we will take the best 25% of the total laps a driver has completed. In the case of fractions, the number will be rounded up to the next whole number. We will consider the best 25% laps, and their lap times will be averaged to determine each driver’s average lap time. Later, we will add up all three drivers’ average lap times to assess the team’s average lap time. This forms the leaderboards’ crux, and all teams will be ranked there based on their average team lap times.

For example, if Driver A of Team 1 completes 50 laps, 25% of 50 laps is 12.5, rounded up to 13. Hence, we will average Driver A’s best 13 laps to give their average lap time of X. Similarly, Driver B and Driver C will have 25% of their best lap times averaged to Y and Z, respectively. The total average team lap time will be X+Y+Z which will then go on the leaderboard for Team 1.

This qualification format is the perfect way for drivers to show their true skills on a level playing field and will be extremely exciting to see which teams can make it through to The Sim Grid x VCO World Cup.

When asked for his view on this format, Event Admin, Jack Bird, said  “The Sim Grid x VCO World Cup qualifying will pair one of the best tracks in ACC with a car that is historically under-used and under-appreciated. Driving the Honda will require teams to be at their peak in order to extract the maximum performance from the car. I truly cannot wait to see the lap times fall, and the names of those that are quick enough rise to the top.”
